Kiwi Sculpture Project

The Kiwi Needs You!

The Eastern Bay Community Foundation warmly invites donations toward a local Kiwi Sculpture - The planned project to install a one-of-a-kind Kiwi Sculpture crafted from Corten Steel - a timeless material that weathers beautifully and reflects the strength and spirit of the Whakatāne district.

The Collective, a group of passionate individuals and local art organisations, are seeking support and funding for the installation of an iconic 20-foot-high Kiwi Sculpture designed by acclaimed New Zealand artist Robert Onnes and made of Corten Steel that will complement the growing awareness that Whakatāne is not only noted for the Kiwi Centre but its growing Art Community.

The first sculpture chosen is the Kiwi Bird which embodies the profound spiritual energy of intuition, nurturing and authenticity. With its endearing presence and unique characteristics, the Kiwi carries within its essence a powerful message for humans seeking a deeper connection with their inner selves and the world around them. This will reflect the present time and future generations of connecting and belonging to our communities. This aligns with Whakatāne's growing reputation as one of the Kiwi Capitals of the World, right in our local bush in the Whakatāne and Ōhope scenic reserves.

The benefit of public art has cultural, social and economic value which is well documented. The objectives are to celebrate local identity, enhance public spaces and foster community engagement.
